Once on a roll, the FDA continues its action against generics

January 6th, 2009

Having hit the jackpot with Ranbaxy, the lobbyists for Big Pharma have continued their pressure on the FDA to shut down more of the competition against their drugs. When the original manufacturers are not able to find a way to extend the patent protection, their only way of defending their profit margins is to undermine the credibility of the generic imports. The usual lines of attack always focus on patient safety. To give you an idea of the scale of this company’s operations, it currently holds FDA licenses to import 96 drugs into the US. It is a major player and its activities significantly affect the profitability of the local companies. Politically, the local manufacturers benefit every time the FDA can be persuaded to take action against a generic manufacturer. But yet another seed of doubt has been planted in the public’s mind. At a time when the US has been building better ties with India, it is odd to see the FDA engaging in such obvious protectionism with two major manufacturers from a single country as its target. Nevertheless, the damage is done to the individual companies’ reputations and to their stock value. They are being punished for being too successful in competing with US business. Fortunately, none of this has affected the manufacture or supply of generic viagra which continues to be a cheap alternative to the branded equivalents. It will require a more brave head of the FDA to challenge the supply of viagra.

Hair loss is a sensitive issue, particularly for women

November 18th, 2008

The loss of hair is usually stressful. People groom their self-image for years, knowing exactly how they can get the maximum effect. So the imminent loss of their crowning glory is a threat to their apparent youthfulness, their physical attractiveness and, most importantly, their self-confidence. It’s estimated about 80 million men experience male-pattern baldness. Roughly the same number of women also lose their hair. Every day in the bathroom is a trial as more hair falls during combing or brushing. There’s often a panic reaction.

People rush to a clinic or try one of the commercial products. They start covering their heads to hide their embarrassment, scan websites on hair pieces when no-one is looking, and then the men sigh with relief because they find propecia. Taking this drug is a commitment. It’s slow to take effect and then its effects only last so long as you continue taking it. Stop and the hair loss resumes. But it works and it’s safe. Every day, a healthy person loses an average of one hundred hairs. Except the “healthy” person replaces the hairs that fall. All of which prompts us to ask, “What causes hair loss?” In both men and women, the most usual cause is heredity.

Current recent research suggests some people are born without one or two key genes. But there are other possible causes. Breaking off for a moment, men can always take propecia which stops the loss and may even allow some hair to grow back. But this drug cannot be taken by women, so we need to say a few words about the other possible causes for them. Leaving heredity to one side, hair can be lost if you don’t have enough protein or iron in your diet, or if you suffer too much stress. This can occur if you go through a crash or fad diet. Divorce or other life-changing events can also produce loss. Another possibility is a hormone imbalance. Some women find some brands of oral contraceptive cause hair loss as can the physical stress and hormonal changes during pregnancy and birth.

The old tried and trusted drugs are better

September 27th, 2008

Down under in Australia, they’ve just finished one of the world’s biggest studies into the treatment of double-sided pneumonia. Working for the University of Melbourne. He analysed swabs taken from the nose and throat, and samples of blood, sputum and urine. He found that 95% of these patients had infections that could be treated with penicillin combined with Doxycycline. In other words, almost all the people who fell sick, were victims of bacteria easily susceptible to the older drugs. They were all from nursing homes and other residential facilities where people had picked up bacteria resistant to the older antibiotics.

The moral of this research is very clear. If you live, work and play in the larger community and you fall sick with a bacterial infection, you don’t need to pay the higher prices for some new antibiotics. You’ll do just as well by relying on penicillin and the other atypical antibiotics like Doxycycline. Don’t be misled by sharp advertising put out by the pharmaceutical industry. Save money by using the traditional remedies. Save them for when the need is greatest (as in when you’re visiting a hospital or nursing home).

Did something slip my mind?

September 26th, 2008

After all, if you take a pill of viagra, you don’t want to see a second head sprouting from your neck several days later. A second mouth to feed is just too much with the price of gas $4 a gallon and a recession threatening. The next time you buy your cheap Viagra, the labeling is going to warn you there’s a risk you won’t remember something important. So, like you’re lying there in bed next to this beautiful woman and want to go again that Viagra’s really got you in the mood. What’s your best line? Well, you could always try, “Are you ready to go for the first touch down?” “The first?” she queries. “Well, I can’t remember anything after getting into bed!” This doesn’t sound good, yeah? . She’s going to be real pissed at you if you say you can’t remember the last five times. What was she doing to please you so much? Now I understand why the FDA is so worried about this TGA. It could get real dangerous in bed if you can’t remember having sex with your partner. So, the choise is right after you.

Get lots of relief for LUTS

September 25th, 2008

It’s very amazing what a difference one vowel can make. LUTS are genuinely unpleasant, particularly when the cause is Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). The only good thing you can say is that BPH is better than the malignant cancer version of the growth that also expands to restrict and, if not treated, crush the bladder. The best performance came as the study proceeded into the third month from the men who took one 5mg tablet per day. As a side effect to this treatment, the men also found their sexual performance improved. Cialis does not remove the need to have surgery to remove the obstruction when it gets unmanageable But the all round quality of life is improved while waiting for surgery. So men find it necessary to pass urine more frequently, largely because the bladder will not empty normally. The research teams based at the University of Texas and Lilly Research Laboratories have just finished a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study into the use of Cialis. In ten countries, more than one thousand men participated being divided into five groups: one with the placebo, and the other four with different dosages of Cialis. The stream is weak and intermittent. Passing urine becomes a strain and, in the end, painful. Well here comes a news flash from the future. There’s going to be a study published in the October edition of The Journal of Urology.

September 23rd, 2008

Xanax is a prescription pill given to you by your doctor for the treatment of anxiety and the subsequent disorders of anxiety. If you suffer from excessive, unrealistic worries, and you are constantly nervous around others or in certain situations, you may be a sufferer of anxiety. Marked by nervousness, and apprehension that may be unexplainable, anxiety attacks or panic attacks occur without any warning. While the sufferer may be feeling fear for nothing at all, the perceived danger is extremely real to the person experiencing it. With the help of your family physician, you can learn to live your life without worry or anxiety. There are many different types of anxiety. Soon, you will be able to understand the way your body reacts to crowds, people, places, and anything unfamiliar so that you can take the doses as needed or properly as prescribed by your doctor. Xanax is prescribed to mainly treat any form of anxiety. This may include the treatment of panic attacks and irritable bowel syndrome. Your doctor will be able to determine what your needs are and prescribe you the doses accordingly. You can also take Xanax for extreme anxiety disorders. Be sure to follow the doctor’s prescriptions exactly as they are ordered so that you do not suffer the more extreme cases of withdrawal.

Side effects of Xanax may include changes in weight, decreased libido, fatigue, impaired coordination in addition to others. Overdosing on Xanax is possible if you are not careful and if you think an overdose has occurred, call your emergency doctor immediately.

Don’t let pain affect your mood

September 15th, 2008

However you want to think about pain, there are several truths you can never escape. When it comes hot and fast, you want it to go away. Once you’ve experienced real pain, you fear its return. If it seems like it’s always there and always going to be there, it affects your mood. The mixture of fear and helplessness wears you down. The cause is irrelevant. It can be a problem in the joints or it can be non-specific. There can be a confirmed diagnosis or your doctor is guessing until more test results come in. It’s at this time that some doctors suggest you take an antidepressant. This is not a judgement on you as a person. Some people may be weak, others strong. In the end, pain gets to them all. So, you’ve been taking a steady dose of Ultram to keep the pain within manageable limits. Now is the time to add one of the tricyclics. They also act like sedatives which helps you to sleep. When you are better rested, you have a more balanced view of your condition. Painkillers like Ultram can only treat the physical symptoms you feel as pain. Painkillers are not a cure. Equally, antidepressants are only intended to help you understand that you can regain mobility and control over your situation. It just takes the strength of will to make it happen.

What do the Chinese know that we don’t?

September 8th, 2008

Although pain comes with a physical component, the mind has a vital role to play. One of the oldest medical treatments in the world is acupuncture. As one of the cornerstones of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practised for several thousand years, it works by stimulating specific points in the body using thin needles. Whereas the West relies on painkillers like Ultram to get results, TCM adopts a holistic approach to heal the whole person. It’s applied to relieve pain arising from a wide number of causes and it has the key advantage that, unlike western medications, it has no adverse side effects so long as it is delivered by a trained professional. In the U.S. the FDA regulates the needles and specifies the manufacturing standards to be applied to produce sterile, non-toxic products. In fact, millions of people in the U.S. use acupuncture and the FDA has almost no reports of problems other than those arising from the failure of sterilization procedures. So far, the use of painkillers like Ultram continues as the norm. But, as an alternative to or alongside physical therapy, there is an increasing acceptance of TCM by Americans. With the right practitioner to give you confidence, acupuncture is worth serious consideration.

Coping with social anxiety disorder under the camera’s eye.

August 27th, 2008

Just try to imagine how much money are made on every star’s name. Now the production costs can pass $100m without pausing for breath. How does a young man in his twenties cope with that pressure? In 2000, he and Mel Gibson carried The Patriot at just $110m. Then he was headlining and on the run from the pack of celebrity magazines, gossip mongers and their paparazzi photographers who shred your privacy and compete with each other to catch you in your most unguarded moments.

Medics define social anxiety disorder as extreme anxiety about facing the judgement of others or behaving in a way that might cause you embarrassment or ridicule. Even the ordinary becomes the potentially extraordinary depending on how the camera captures it (and how some software package can manipulate it to make it more exploitable). When you know that anything you do or say can and will be misinterpreted for another’s profit, is it any surprise that you reach for Xanax? I think not.

But you need the relationship between public and private to stay blurred. To carry the films, your name has to be on everyone’s lips. You have to be the eye candy for the media voyeurism. Drop from those celebrity magazines and gossip columns, and you’re no longer the bankable star. Where can you buy Xanax without someone taking a picture of you? Buy Xanax online. But Heath lost control, mixed his medications, took too much, and paid the price. Let that be a warning to you all. Stay alive by keeping control of your intake of Xanax and any other medications.

Really, the whole movie industry is probably built on Xanax. Feeling nervous or anxious before you set foot outside your front door knowing you’ll be stalked by photographers wherever you go? Take a Xanax. If you’ve agorophobia, take another pill. The next magazine you open has pictures of you getting (un)dressed in your bedroom. They were taken with a telephoto lens from the building opposite. That’s not the first sign of a panic attack is it? Draw the curtains and take another Xanax just to keep on living.

The one consolation in all this is that, even though Xanax was not able to keep poor Heath going, we still have the next Batman film to look forward to. By all accounts, Heath’s performance as the Joker in the Dark Knight is well worth the price of entry. Although there’s perhaps something inherently ironic about Xanaxman playing the Joker. Here’s a character so completely over-the-top, so excessive in his nature with all that malicious glee bubbling over into destructive energy. Did Heath have to take Xanax to act the part of someone who so obviously doesn’t take Xanax?

What’s in a name? What about cannabis?

August 26th, 2008

Medications like acomplia that block the cannabinoid receptors help to reduce addictive behavior and reduce appetite. Acomplia is now a front line treatment for obesity in Europe, second in effectiveness only to the use of gastric bands or surgical bypasses (which reduce weight by an average of 30%). The July conference heard news that one constituent of cannabis, THVC, may offer a better way to reduce appetite than acomplia and, more importantly, may be effective to treat neurodegenerative disorders like Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. Why is more not heard about these advances? Possibly because of the prejudice that cannabis is a drug that should be banned. It is a shame society cannot see beyond a name to the good results science can produce. By coincidence, the French health authority Afssaps also released new statistics confirming the safety profile of acomplia in relation to depression. People with no history of depression show no adverse symptoms. Others only show an increase in depression at the beginning of a course of treatment. This can easily be monitored and compensated for.
